What independent living assistive technology services are available?
A wide range of services are available including assessment, implementation and follow-up services. Usually an assessment that specifically addresses challenges or problems starts the process. The assessment report summarizes findings and provides a suggested plan for additional services or AT-related recommendations when needed. Any implementation or follow-up services require authorization by the counselor. -
Can a counselor discuss the feasibility of assistive technology to help with independent living needs before making a referral?
Yes. Counselors are encouraged to call or email questions before making a referral. This will help to gain a better understanding of what should be expected from using assistive technology and can provide suggestions for individuals where vocational rehabilitation outcomes do not seem feasible. -
Are assessments completed in the veteran’s home?
Yes. In most cases an appointment will be made to meet with the veteran at their residence. Completing assessments in their residence helps to identify environmental variables which can impact independence and provide the counselor with important information for overall planning. -
Will the assessment provide information on sources of AT and expected costs?
Yes. Usually a number of options will be recommended along with product information and features, vendor information and costs. Low tech and high tech options, along with suggestions for accommodations that may help to alleviate issues, provide a comprehensive look at each situation. -
What is the cost of services?
Independent living assistive technology services will be billed at a flat hourly rate of $75. Once referral is received and contact made with the veteran, a brief overview of the planned assessment and anticipated cost will be sent to the counselor for approval. Complete IL assessments usually range from $600-$750. -
Is the construction of ramps or other remodeling part of services that are available?
No. Independent living assistive technology services do not include actual construction or remodeling. Assistance will be provided to help identify prospective contractors or vendors in the area that have had experience with accessibility modifications. Implementation and follow-up services can be provided to help counselors to monitor work and inspect completed construction.
